A too-narrow choice fixes on a single detail that the passage mentions only briefly, rather than the idea that runs through the whole thing. It undershoots the main idea. The trap is that the detail really is in the passage, so the choice feels supported.
Passage: Grandma's garden was the pride of the neighborhood. Roses climbed the fence, and tomatoes grew fat on the vine. Neighbors often stopped to admire the flowers. In the corner, a small birdbath attracted sparrows. Question: What is the main idea of the passage? Choice A: A small birdbath in the corner attracted sparrows. Choice B: Grandma's garden was a beautiful, admired part of the neighborhood. Choice A is too narrow, because it is one small detail rather than the passage's overall point, so Choice B is correct.
To spot a too-narrow choice, ask whether it covers the whole passage or just one line. If it fits only a single sentence, it is too narrow to be the main idea. The right answer is broad enough to cover the whole passage but still specific to its actual point.
Worked examples
Passage: The town's new library quickly became a favorite spot. Children gathered for story time, and students found quiet corners to study. Adults borrowed novels and joined book clubs. The library even added a small coffee cart by the entrance. Question: What is the main idea of the passage? Choice A: The library added a small coffee cart by the entrance. Choice B: The new library became a popular gathering place for the whole town. Choice A is too narrow, because it is one small detail rather than the main idea, so Choice B is correct.
Passage: The soccer team had struggled for years. This season, they practiced harder and learned to work together. They won game after game and reached the finals. Their new coach had once played for a national team. Question: What is the central idea of the passage? Choice A: The team's new coach had once played for a national team. Choice B: Through hard work and teamwork, the struggling team turned its season around. Choice A is too narrow, because it is a small background detail rather than the central idea, so Choice B is correct.
Passage: Every fall, the small farm welcomed visitors for its harvest festival. Families picked pumpkins and rode on hay wagons. Music played while cider was pressed fresh from apples. A single scarecrow stood guard by the barn. Question: What is the main idea of the passage? Choice A: A single scarecrow stood guard by the barn. Choice B: The farm's harvest festival offered families a lively autumn day. Choice A is too narrow, because it is one small detail rather than the main idea, so Choice B is correct.
